Changes to FAFSA and Opportunity Next
FAFSA has undergone major changes for the 2024-2025 academic year, including new questions, updated eligibility calculations and changes to how grants are calculated. Additionally, learners have less time to complete their application this year.
With these challenges in mind, an amendment to the original Opportunity Next Colorado legislation (SB23-205) passed in June so that scholarship eligibility is extended to those who have not been able to successfully complete the FAFSA or CASFA. While all degree seeking scholarship recipients are still expected to complete FAFSA or CASFA, a waiver form will now be made available for those who cannot meet this requirement, and non-degree seeking scholarship recipients are now exempt from completing the FAFSA/CASFA. Additionally, legislation initially prevented COSI scholarship recipients from concurrently receiving Opportunity Next scholarships, but this is no longer the case with this recent legislative amendment.
Opportunity Next understands that meeting FAFSA/CASFA requirements can be challenging due to various personal and financial circumstances. By broadening scholarship eligibility, we aim to ensure all learners have a fair chance to receive the financial support they need. Our commitment remains to prepare students for success in their education and career pathways in Colorado.
